Gun Deaths in the U.S. (2000–2023)

An interactive data story exploring gun-related deaths in the U.S. from 2000 to 2023, highlighting trends by intent, geography, and population

About the Story

The numbers behind gun-related deaths in the US tell a very different story than most people expect.

Gun-related deaths in the US have risen steadily since 2000. This analysis uses CDC data summarised by The Trace to track more than two decades of figures, broken down by intent, location, and population.

In total numbers, California and Texas record the highest death counts. Adjust for population, and the picture shifts. Washington D.C. has the highest per capita rate of any state in the dataset.

That gap between total counts and per capita rates is where the data becomes most informative.
